St. John’s Church is the oldest standing building in the City still used for its original purpose. Its origins go back to the earliest years of Christianity and evidence suggests it was this reason the King Ethelred of Mercia and St Wilfrid of Ripon chose to build their great Minister which later became the Cathedral until the Reformation.
