Telling Chester’s history in a nutshell, this tour is led by Peter Carrington of Chester Archaeological Society. It provides a chance to catch up with the latest ideas about the amphitheatre and its surroundings: Stone Age and Iron Age discoveries; the development and design of the amphitheatre; its reuse in Saxon and Viking times; incorporation into the medieval ‘Bishop’s Borough’ based on St John’s Church; the emergence of the area as a fashionable suburb in the 18th cent and as a focus of Anglican-Catholic rivalry in the 19th century.
Meet at the entrance to the amphitheatre adjacent to Souter’s Lane. Takes place 26 June at 14:00 and 27 June at 10:30. This event is FREE.
